Hokitika Gorge is a beautiful spot for a stopover on the West Coast. It’s about 30 minutes southeast of Hokitika proper. Getting to the pools is a short walk form the road, only about 15 minutes. Depending on the day and the weather, the water will be a majestic shade of turquoise. You’ll cross over several bridges overlooking the crystal clear river as the path winds through the FernGully-like forest. For reference, we actually enjoyed the pools at Hokitika Gorge more than the ones at Haast Pass.
*Tip: Although beautiful, if you’re going to hang around the pools longer than a few minutes, bring insect repellant! Wearing long sleeves and pants also helps. The sandflies in places like these are murder.
